Arizona State University has a responsibility to engage the community and improve Arizona prek-12 education. To aid in improving Arizona’s education, ASU has created the University Public School Initiative (UPSI). Recognizing ASU's clear responsibility to make a positive difference in Arizona schools, UPSI will:

  • Increase access to innovative and quality education for all of Arizona’s children and families
  • Provide access to new and existing resources from across the entire university
  • Improve the success rates of Arizona students in entering and graduating from college

In partnership with local schools and the community, UPSI has launched a network of preK-12 research-based learning centers, as well as partnerships with already existing Arizona schools, called the New American Schools. These schools are “centers of innovation” that set a new standard in education through continuous improvement based upon shared research, the development of new curriculum and instruction methodology, and the identification of best practices.

Participation
There are three ways families, schools, communities, and businesses can participate in UPSI: The University Public School Network, School Partnerships, and the Virtual Learning Center.

University Public School Network
The New American Schools operated by UPSI and located on or near the ASU campuses are part of the University Public School Network. These schools are “centers of innovation” where families, educators, ASU faculty, community members, and business leaders work together to create socially aware, creative, and high-achieving students.  Students participate in a program focused on international communication and studies, critical thinking, and technological aptitude that prepares them to successfully compete in and lead an increasingly knowledge-based global society.

School Partnerships
In addition to the University Public School Network, UPSI partners with schools throughout Arizona that share the beliefs and values of the New American Schools.  These partnerships bring the resources of ASU to these schools with the goal of increased student achievement.

Virtual Learning Center
The Virtual Learning Center provides real-time information about innovations in school leadership, curriculum, and instruction methodology based on research from the New American Schools.  The academic performance and learning innovations from the New American Schools are shared online to enhance increased student achievement worldwide.
